Notes: Includes the 15 PEPFAR focus countries and other countries that are recipients of approved bilateral funds to combat HIV. PEPFAR also provides support to regional programs, which are not reflected in the country list above.

Definitions: PEPFAR: The U.S. government's initiative, first introduced in 2003, to address HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria in developing countries. Led by the State Department Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator, PEPFAR targets significant bilateral aid to a number of countries. It also includes funding for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. PEPFAR was originally authorized for five years (FY 2004 to FY 2008) by the U.S. Congress under the ''United States Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Act of 2003'' (Public Law No: 108-25). PEPFAR was reauthorized in 2008 for another five years (FY 2009 to FY 2013) as the ''Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde United States Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008''.
