Definitions: Diphtheria: A bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheria, transmitted from person to person through close physical and respiratory contact. It can cause infection of the nasopharynx, which may lead to difficulty breathing and death. Diphtheria is preventable by vaccine.
